An Update On The '70 Yamaha

Today was a good day. After posting this morning I went down to the basement and got the wheels I laced up and trued over the winter, dug out some nice Avon RoadRider tires I had put aside for this bike and went to work polishing.I got the wheels all polished then mounted the tires .It was a good day out in my shop.I even managed to cut the grass ! Tomorrow I do other stuff ,perhaps a ride on the Moto Guzzi.Sunday is a rainy day according to the weather on the computer so I'll continue on the little Yamaha and get the thing all clean and ready to install the motor and new wheels & tires.

Finally Getting To This(my 1970 Yamaha DS6C)

This project is finally in it's final stages. You know,I started building this bike in 1997 ! I built it and rolled it down the street to my storage garage where it sat until 2012. I moved in 2004 , restored my friends 1966 Yamaha in 2006 ,bought my Moto Guzzi 850 T in 2007 ,went on my 3 month road trip in 2010,started working on this again in 2013 and pretty much got it together but then went traveling again to Canada. It has been pushes back and back for way too long. So,now here we are in 2016,I'm starting to get the money together to move to Arizona and this bike is part of that process.I noticed the bike was leaking 2 stroke oil .The other day I decided to attack this thing and finish it.I pulled the motor out and got it up on the bench the other night.
Yesterday I ripped into it.There was all sorts of 2 stroke oil that had built up in the crank caseand this tells me the oil injector pump has a problem. So I turned the motor up on end and let it drain after I took off the top end.
After it was finished draining I took the pump off and took it apart to rebuild it.I decided to skip the rebuild of this pump and use a better one after opening it up.I didn't really see any problems with it but something told me to use a different one .I am thinking there might be a small crack or something that is causing the check valves to allow oil to leak past them into the motor.I'm thinking I could waste a whole lot of time doing this job and still have a leaking pump so I went into my inventory and dug out another pump. Took it all apart and cleaned and inspected it.Everything looks good so in it went. The cases were getting that white fuz like corrosion from sitting for so long in my shop so I spent the rest of yesterday polishing them and other parts like nuts & bolts, kick lever, shift lever ,carb air cleaner joint clamps, and so on.I also noticed that I had lower compression in one cylinder. You know,if it was only 5 psi I would have left it alone because the rings will seat and it will improve but it was 10psi down so I decided to use a different cylinder. Again,I went into the inventory and found a standard bore jug ,honed it,washed it,and oiled it. I also put in new crank seals that I recently bought for this project .Now I have everything I need to have the motor in good working order.I installed the oil pump and lines then called it a day.
So,today it continues.I'm going to clean the frame and pull off the wheels and put the wheels I built this winter on after I mount these Avon RoadRider tires on them.Once I get the wheels finished and on the bike I'll polish everything 'cause it's so much easier doing this with no motor ,gas tank, and side covers on it.Soon it will be ready to go.
